Formula and assumptions

The target is annual expenses divided by the withdrawal rate as a decimal. Current savings and monthly contributions then use compound future value until they meet the target.

Rates, timing, and compounding

The return is a nominal annual investment assumption. If expenses are stated in today's money, a real return or an inflation adjusted expense path may be more appropriate for detailed planning.

Monthly contributions are invested at month end. The target is treated as constant, so the timing estimate is easiest to interpret when expenses are already stated in the same money basis as the return.

Investments compound monthly in the projection. The withdrawal rate itself is not a compounding rate and should not be entered as the investment return.

A step by step interpretation

Read the FIRE target as a spending multiple created by the withdrawal rate. At four percent, the target is twenty five times annual expenses. A lower withdrawal rate creates a larger multiple. Next compare current invested savings with the target through funded percentage. This measures distance in capital terms, not years of safe income. Time to target is found by projecting current savings and monthly contributions until the balance first reaches the fixed target. Review the table to see whether progress comes mainly from contributions early and investment growth later. The monthly amount for ten years answers a different question: what contribution would be required to reach the same target on that fixed schedule. Compare it with the entered contribution. If the ten year amount is far higher, the displayed target date will be later. Every result assumes the expense amount and target remain unchanged unless you update them.

Sensitivity analysis

Begin by changing annual expenses because spending has a direct inverse relationship with the target. A ten percent expense reduction lowers the target by ten percent when the withdrawal rate is unchanged. Next lower the withdrawal rate to see the cost of a more cautious spending rule. Then test returns at least two percentage points below the central case and reduce monthly contributions to a level sustainable through income disruption. Because the target is fixed while savings compound, a small return change may shift the crossing year substantially near the end. Test inflation separately by increasing the future expense input rather than mixing a nominal return with today's fixed spending unknowingly. Record target, funded percentage, and years for each run. Formula verification

For the projection path, calculate future value of current savings and monthly end of month contributions for each whole year. The first year whose value equals or exceeds target is the displayed time. At zero return, each yearly balance should increase by twelve monthly contributions. Verify the ten year contribution by inserting it into the same future value formula with current savings and checking that the result equals target. Lowering expenses or raising current savings must never delay the target under otherwise identical valid inputs. These relationships check arithmetic and crossing logic. They do not validate the withdrawal rate or market return as safe assumptions.

When this model is unsuitable

This is not a retirement withdrawal simulation and cannot establish that a portfolio will support spending indefinitely. It is unsuitable for treating one historical market average as a promised path to a fixed date. It cannot decide whether extreme spending cuts are sustainable or account for health, care, housing, dependants, and quality of life. A target based on one recent year may be distorted by unusual purchases or omitted periodic costs. The tool also should not be used to compare risky and stable assets only by projected return. Reaching the numerical target does not assess access restrictions, diversification, or whether the portfolio could withstand an early decline once withdrawals begin.

A consistent comparison method

Define annual expenses consistently before comparing cases. Use a full year that includes periodic bills, tax paid from the portfolio, maintenance, replacement costs, and a realistic allowance for irregular spending. Create an essential case and a broader lifestyle case. Apply the same withdrawal rate when isolating spending differences, then vary withdrawal rate separately. Keep investment return on the same fee and inflation basis. Record current savings, monthly contribution, target, funded percentage, and crossing year. Add notes for income expected after financial independence, but do not subtract it implicitly in only one case. When comparing asset strategies, include volatility, liquidity, fees, tax, and currency outside the calculator. Rank scenarios by resilience and lifestyle realism as well as date. A dramatically earlier date achieved only through a high return or incomplete expense budget is not a sound comparison result.

A zero contribution can still reach the target through assumed growth, though the date may be highly sensitive to return. At zero return, the path becomes current savings plus contributions. If monthly contribution is also zero and savings are below target, the target is never reached. A target held constant against nominal investment growth can overstate progress when expenses are stated in today's money. Large one year spending items can inflate the target if they are not separated from recurring expenses.

Build an expense budget matching that definition and separate essential from adjustable spending. Calculate targets under at least two withdrawal rates and project a cautious return case. Why can a small rate change produce a large result change?
